When the label is printed through a direct thermal printer, the small elements on the printer heat up and activate parts of the chemical layer to create the image required. How do you know if a label is direct thermal?
There is one simple test that you can use to tell if a label is direct thermal. Take the label and scratch it quickly with your fingernail as if you were lighting a match. It may take a couple of hard strikes. If a dark mark appears on the label, it is direct.

What is direct thermal and thermal transfer?
Direct thermal printing uses chemically treated, heat-sensitive media that blackens when it passes under the thermal printhead, while thermal transfer printing uses a heated ribbon to produce durable, long-lasting images on a wide variety of materials.

Can direct thermal labels be exposed to sunlight?
Direct thermal labels cannot be exposed to direct sunlight, heat or other catalysts as the label will darken and make texts/barcodes unreadable.
