Printing is one of the four great inventions of ancient Chinese working people. Woodblock printing was invented in the Tang Dynasty and was widely used in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. Bi Sheng invented movable type printing during the reign of Song Renzong, marking the birth of movable type printing. He was the first inventor in the world, marking the birth of movable type printing about 400 years before the German Johannes Gutenberg.

Printing is the forerunner of modern human civilization, creating conditions for the widespread dissemination and exchange of knowledge. Printing has spread to Korea, Japan, Central Asia, West Asia and Europe.

Before the invention of printing, many people were illiterate. Because medieval books were so expensive, a Bible was made from 1,000 lambskins. Except for the tome of the Bible, the information copied in the book is serious, mostly religious, with little entertainment or everyday practical information.

Before the invention of printing, the spread of culture mainly depended on handwritten books. Manual copying is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it is easy to copy mistakes and omissions, which not only hinders the development of culture, but also brings undue losses to the spread of culture. Printing is characterized by convenience, flexibility, time-saving and labor-saving. It is a major breakthrough in ancient printing.

Chinese printing. It is an important component of Chinese culture; it evolves with the development of Chinese culture. If we start from its source, it has gone through four historical periods, namely the source, ancient times, modern times and contemporary times, and has a development process of more than 5,000 years. In the early days, in order to record events and disseminate experience and knowledge, the Chinese people created early written symbols and sought a medium to record these characters. Due to the limitations of the means of production at that time, people could only use natural objects to record written symbols. For example, engraving and writing words on natural materials such as rock walls, leaves, animal bones, stones, and bark.

      Printing and papermaking benefited mankind.
